About This Quote

A thing that is horrible cannot be horrible to the same degree all the time. A movie that is horrifying one hour is not horrifying the next hour of the same movie. However, it can be horrifying to some degree for each of those hours. It can also be scarier for some of those hours than others.

For example, the first time someone watches Despicable Me , they are laughing at the idea of a supervillain being a person who only has one eye and has an accordion for a hand. The story’s villain, Gru, is hilarious and brilliant. The first time someone sees the movie, Gru is just funny and silly.

However, as people watch it again and again, Gru becomes more frightening. He becomes a character who kidnaps children and forces them to do his bidding in a world where everyone is trying to kill him. Eventually he takes over a city and threatens to destroy the world unless he gets his way -- which he doesn’t get because there are superheroes in charge.
